I have found most volunteer involving organisations are frightened to take a volunteer with a history of psychotic illness. When we had some money we put on a training course on supporting volunteers with mental illness and lots of success stories were told of how volunteering had helped people with depression. However organisations seemed to have little expereince of supporting volunteers with psychotic illnesses and most thought that this would be too risky and they do not have the skills to support them.
I have started advising that key workers and care workers, volunteer alongside the volunteers who have had psychotic illness until they feel settled and confident that the volunteer will not come to significant harm
I would like to hear of others expereince and how this can work better
